A guide to prospective participants
If you are reading this then you have been recruited to create a work of sonic art. At this stage the focus is collecting source material (the musical performance) and modulation signals (the secret). You are being asked to contribute three things to this project:
1. A musical performance. The definition of “musical” here may be extended as far as you feel necessary, preferably bound only by the notion that at some point during your performance acoustic energy is produced.
2. A secret. Your secret will be encoded in the system and later used as a visual element and a modulation source.
3. A connection. After completing the session you will choose and arrange the next participant(s). Your choice should be limited only by availability: Los Angeles (March 13th to 24th), Seattle (March 24th ->), New York (May 8-13) and Portland (October 8th to12th).
The Procedure
The recording process will be identical for each musician to the extent that all will be presented the same auditory material in the same order. The material will playback through headphones and the recording will be made with a single microphone. The session lasts for about an hour. A brief outline is as follows:
1. symmetrical note pairs. A very simple set of instructions will be given (e.g. “play eight eighth notes of the same pitch immediately followed by a whole note of any higher pitch”). This will be played while listening to rhythmic material.
2. short musical phrases.Several short passages will be looped, you may record for as long or short as you wish.
3. encode a secret. You will tell the system a secret.
4. move and detune. You will join in the playing of a melody. After each pass you will detune a few cents and replay your part. As well, on each pass the distance between the sound source (instrument, voice, amp, ect.) and the microphone will be increased.
